Niam Jain Polar Plunges in the Arctic Circle and Paints Inspiration
The polar plunge is one of the coolest things you can do in the Arctic Circle. It is a bucket list item. When the Polar Plunge was announced in Quark’s main auditorium, Niam had decided to plunge. I tried to talk him out of it, as I was unsure if he knew what he was getting himself into. Niam was adamant he would do the polar plunge with my elder son, Rohan, and me. Ravi, my husband, sacrificed himself as the much-needed family photographer, ready to capture this historic family moment.
The polar plunge occurred on the gangway at the back of the Quark Expedition ship. Niam Jain stood in line with the other brave individuals. I was worried, but Niam was brave. Niam watched as other passengers were harnessed, walked to the edge of the gangway, jumped, swam back to the ship, climbed up and had a celebratory tequila shot, and was finally rewarded with an Arctic Polar Plunge Badge.
I was nervous. Around me, I could see a doctor and zodiacs in the water with staff in case of emergency.
When it was Niam’s turn, he took off his towel and shivered as the cold Arctic Air hit his bare skin; he was only wearing his bathing suit. The staff harnessed him. Niam Jain walked bravely to the plank, stared at the cold Arctic Waters, and jumped as far as he could. The onlookers from the ship’s top cheered on Niam, their cheers echoing loudly in the still airs. Niam was startled. I could see it in his face, the ice-cold temperature ripping through his body.
He scurried back to the ship, pulled himself out, and hurried in. I wrapped him in a towel. He took a shot of tequila, took his badge, and ran up to the sauna to warm himself. I could see on his face that he was proud of himself.
Niam Jain inspired the other passengers and the crew at Quark Expeditions.
We are all proud of our Niam.
Back home, Niam hit the studio. Niam painted Inspiration based on the feelings and senses of this experience.
A gorgeous oil on canvas painting that will inspire everyone in your home, a great conversation piece, that we are all capable of doing so much in life.
