The Making of ‘Compilation’

‘Compilation’ was painted in the summer of 2024, marking a shift in Niam Jain’s painting style. Niam’s newest work is filled with intricate patterns, complex geometry and vibrant textures.

Niam began ‘Compilation’ as he typically does – with his preferred palette of reds, blues, greens and yellows. He worked in our lush backyard, surrounded by large trees, bushes, a flower garden and a host of wildlife – bunnies, a ground hog and other interesting visitors. The mood was calm, the sun was bright and nature was abundant – the perfect stage for Niam to work. Soft music played in the background, a calming Orchestral piece.

Although the painting’s bold, staccato marks did seem random at first, I began to perceive a definite structure as the painting developed. Niam meticulously applied strokes and forms in close proximity, some blending with remarkable harmony, others in sharp contrast. Turning the canvas as he painted, Niam varied brushstroke quality, direction and visual emphasis. Watching as he worked, I was challenged to reconcile the evolving colour interactions, sophisticated movement and subtle variations in tonality. Observing the entire canvas, I began to see these disparate strokes combine to create a more robust image.

Before long, the piece was completed. The final artwork was and is mesmerizing. Niam had conjured some new variation of his style! And I had just witnessed it. The family came running out to share in the moment. We turned the canvas around in all directions, marveling at the painting’s distinct palette, forms, and dynamic. Depending on where we stood or how we moved around the artwork, our impression was different. There was a distinct and integral relationship between us, the viewers and the artwork. You could experience Niam.

Rohan, Niam’s older brother, could not stop taking pictures. Niam beamed with happiness. We were all very proud.
